BWA West Midlands Cyclo-Cross League 2015/16 Venues Review

Event organise are likely to change the courses due to varying conditions and risk assessments.  The Strava details are based on the courses used for last years races, click the ride title for more detail

BWA WMCCL Round 1 (Redditch) 6th Sept 2015

Pitcher Oak Woods, Bromsgrove Road, Redditch B97 4SP

This venue is an old favourite and has been used many time in recent years.  The start is usually on the gravel slope up on to the course proper at the open coppice area that is also used for the finish and pit area.  Improved course design over the years have made for a good following circuit that includes plenty of open grassy spaces, single track through the woods, steep muddy banks at the back of the woods, gravel tracks  and some fast technical descents.  Parking is at the rugby club, which usually fills quickly and overflows to surrounding residential streets so be considerate when finding parking.  Sign-on is usually on the open grass area by the finish area, at the top of the starting slope.  Mobile caterers are usually there selling beverages and snacks.

BWA WMCCL Round 2 (Shrewsbury) 13th sept 2015

Sundorne Leisure Centre, Sundorne Road, Shrewsbury SY1 4RQ

Another venue that has been on the calendar a while and has continue to develop over recent seasons being used for National Trophy events and now this year to host the National Championships in January.  A real testament to Dave Mellor, the event organisor, who’s continued to raise the bar at this event over the years to provide a well organised day of racing with good facilities at the leisure centre.  The start utilises the tarmac cycling circuit and cuts over the grassy mounts in the centre, with a notable off-camber section.  Away from the cycling circuit the course circles the football pitches and into the woods at the back of the venue with plenty of slippery roots, muddy turns and fast tracks before emerging by the two-way pit area and back on to the cycling circuit.  Sign-on is usually at the back of the leisure centre by the cycling circuit.  There are changing rooms, showers and a cafeteria in the leisure centre and water taps at the side.

BWA WMCCL Round 3 (Solihull) 20th Sept 2015

The Heart of England Conference Centre, Meridan Road, Fillongley CV7 8DX

First used last year in mid-October, this venue provides plenty of parking and facilities at the back of the conference centre.  Last year there had been quite a bit of rain on the lead up to the event, though it was ran off in bright Autumn sunshine, which made the course cut up and become very muddy in sections forcing riders to run some sections.  The start is on the gravel track by the lake and joins the course on the finishing straight before turning into the grassy field that became very muddy.  After utilising the mounds at the back to the field the course comes back through the long grass to enter the wooded on gravel tracks and take on some single track through the trees before emerging on to the grassy area in front of the crowd and finish area.  As this was a last minute event last year the course may be tweaked quite a bit for this year, though it gained favourable reviews from the racers.  Sign-on was in the marquee behind the conference centre and there was a kiosk selling beverages and snacks.  Last year there was bike washing and taps available too.

BWA WMCCL Round 4 (Baggeridge) 27th Sept 2015

Baggeridge Country Park, Sedgeley DY3 4HB

Another venue that has seen regular use over recent seasons with course improvements to develop a fast flowing, technical traditional cyclocross course utilising the two wide open spaces, along with the wooded sections on either side.  The start is behind the final bend before the finish and usually goes full length to the far side of the park on the opening lap.  Plenty of off-camber sections and twists and turns through the wooded areas, including some step (rideable without traffic).  Lots of open places for passing.  Mainly grassing, some roots and very muddy sections in wet weather, a few gravel tracks.  The Park has a pay and display car park, toilets and a cafĂ©.
